Workshop to Upskill Tomato Farmers

Beqa Island is well known for producing tomatoes.

To enhance the interest, farmers on the island will be given the opportunity by their district officer to be part of a workshop and awareness next Wednesday.

“The workshop is being planned for the training of the villagers of Sawau,” Acting district officer Suva Dharmend Prasad said.

“We will form a co-operative that will buy the tomatoes and store it here for one or two days then transport it to Pacific Habour to sell.

“The Government has already built a shed for the off-season tomato farming for Sawau Village.

“We are looking to form a co-operative, to sell tomatoes and plant tomatoes off-season and have a nursery factory for Beqa Island, which they can have for their income-generating programme.”

There are 50 farmers on the island involved in farming and supplying tomatoes.
