Women would have better access to legal services and information after a brochure that simplified the Family Law Act (FLA) was launched by Fiji Women’s Rights Movement (FWRM) and the Family Court of Fiji at the Judges Common Room in Suva.

FWRM executive director Tara Chetty last Friday said the eight brochures explained different areas of the Act, particularly access to services.

“We are delighted with the opportunity to partner with the Family Court of Fiji once again in publishing these brochures, which will help families better understand how the law applies to them,” she said.

Ms Chetty said the new sets replaced the 2007 version, which had become out-dated after changes were made to the FLA.

While this was a restart of their relationship, she said FWRM was keen on working closely with the Family Court focusing on the Family Law Act.

“We’re looking to work closely together and do some research on women’s access to justice focusing on the family law act and see if there are any areas of research we can do together,” she said.

“The movement is grateful to the Family Court for this collaborative venture.

“The organisation is hopeful that through this partnership, these brochures will empower those women often left in highly vulnerable situations, to seek proper redress through the Courts for security, protection and justice.”

The brochures were available in iTaukei, English and Hindi from the Family Court of Fiji and Fiji Women’s Rights Movement. The Family Law Act brochures were officially launched by the Chief Justice and Head of the Judiciary Anthony Gates.
