The Australian government, through the Pacific Women Shaping Pacific Development (Pacific Women) Programme, is supporting a 10-year, $320-million programme across 14 Pacific island countries to improve the political, economic and social opportunities for Pacific women.
Fiji is also a major beneficiary of the programme which, aims to achieve economic growth and prosperity in the Pacific region by empowering women.
The Australian government is supporting the Fiji’s Ministry of Women on the implementation of the National Gender Policy and is providing technical advice to strengthen the ministry’s programme co-ordination, monitoring and evaluation. As part of this assistance, a gender advisor is now based with the ministry full time for 12 months.
Minister for Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation Rosy Akbar said: “The ministry is thankful to the Australian government for its support and assistance to foster socioeconomic advancement of women in Fiji. The gender advisor’s role will make a great impact in terms the implementation of the National Gender Policy; including development of an Implementation Plan and Monitoring and Evaluation framework,” she said.
“The Fijian Government is committed towards increasing economic opportunities for women and also to increase women’s representation in leadership at all levels of decision making.”
She said to achieve this, the ministry was grateful to the Australian government for its partnership to actualise the plans outlined in the policy.
“Gender advisor Mr Glenn Davies has started his work with the ministry which basically focuses on the implementation of Fiji’s National Gender Policy throughout the Fiji Public Service.
“Fiji’s National Gender Policy was launched in March 2014 and it reflects the Fijian Government’s commitment to promote gender equality, social justice and sustainable development in Fiji,” Ms Akbar said.
