Bainimarama Leaves For India Next Week

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama will leave the country for India next Tuesday to attend the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Co-operation (FIPIC) at Jaipur on August 21.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun yesterday by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The Ministry for Foreign Affairs yesterday confirmed its Deputy Secretary, Luke Daunivalu, would be accompanying the PM on this trip.

The Times of India said as many as 10 out of 14 countries would be represented at the level of Heads of State or governments while the remaining four would be represented at the level of foreign ministers and Special Envoys and senior officials.

It reported officials said economic assistance and partnership with the Pacific island states would be key theme of the summit, adding that the Modi government would announce 10 areas, including energy and infrastructure, where Delhi would extend assistance to these countries.

This will be the second meeting after the one held in Fiji last year as part of India’s efforts to build ties with countries of these regions.

In an earlier interview at the Holiday Inn Suva with Fiji’s High Commissioner to India Yogesh Karan, he said they had invited all stakeholders to give their submissions on key areas they wanted to be discussed in the meeting. He said these submissions would be shortlisted and submitted to the Prime Minister for discussions.

Mr Karan said one key focus area would be climate change.
