Drug Circulation Up, Says Police CID

The value of hard drugs that have been seized has increased from $139,000 in year 2012 to more than $9million in 2014, says Police Criminal Investigation Department major crimes manager Eparama Waqa.

Mr Waqa said there had also been an increase in drug circulation in Fiji during the past few years.

“We have not included the value of drugs that were seized recently but the cultivation of drugs in the interior parts of Viti Levu increased from $5.36m in 2013 to $7.25m last year.

“One of the observation made is that drugs has been cultivated in the most interior parts of our country; places which are hard to reach by people and also by the Police and our main challenge is that Fiji is surrounded by the sea,” he said.

He added that involvement in drugs could be reduced if our intelligence unit and border security were strengthened.
