The Fijian Pearls continue their ninth placing battle after defeating Sri Lanka 77-31 in the qualifying round yesterday.

Speaking from Sydney head coach Kate Carpenter said it was a good win for them.

“We are happy with this win the girls played according to plan, they caused turnovers and were focused.

“All the girls had chance to play today and now as we battle for the 9-12 placing we are taking one game at a time and working on our ball speed,” Carpenter said.

Team captain Mere Neiliko said they have worked hard.

“It was our goal to push the shooters out of their comfort zones and go for the rebounds.

“The girls worked hard till the very last second, that’s all I’ve asked from them from the beginning,” Neiliko said.

Neiliko was very instrumental in yesterday’s game; she was able to put pressure on Sri Lankan shooters in the ring.

It was the quick hands of Fijian Pearls centre Nina Cirikisuva feeding into the ring, making way for shooters Afa Rusivakula and Unaisi Rauluni to continue their accurate goal scoring. Fiji led 19-7 in the first-quarter.

The second-quarter saw the Pearls’ wing attack Alesi Waqa dominate in goal assists and lead for almost every centre pass making way for wing defence Jane Costello help out bringing the ball down court.

Fiji played the first-half high in turnovers and intercepts, particularly in the second quarter setting them up for a comfortable 20 goal lead at half time.

The third-quarter saw Sri Lankan goalkeeper Viraji Pethigoda commit a high number of penalties in the goal ring, giving Fijian shooters access to score open goals. However it was the agility again of Fijian centre Nina Cirikisuva proving to be pivotal in the midcourt.

It was Fiji in the end who took control of the last quarter with long overhead passes into the ring all the way from midcourt that saw them capitalise to the very end.

Fiji plays Barbados at 2:20pm (Fiji) today.
