Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has sent a congratulatory message to his Singaporean counterpart, Hon Lee Hsien Loong, on the occasion of Singapore’s National Day.

In his message, the Prime Minister paid tribute to Singapore’s success and growth adding that the occasion was a time for the entire world to reflect on Singapore’s achievements over the past half-century.

“I have the honour to convey to you on behalf of the Fijian Government and Fijian people our warmest congratulations and best wishes on the 50th anniversary of the founding of Singapore,” the Prime Minister said.

“It is a momentous occasion in the life of your nation and one for the entire world to reflect on Singapore’s extraordinary achievements over the past half century”.

Prime Minister Bainimarama also paid tribute to the ordinary citizens of Singapore who have worked to build the nation to what it is today.

“With little in the way of resources except the enterprise of your people, Singaporeans have forged a modern nation state that at every level, sets a standard for other nations to emulate,” he said.

Prime Minister Bainimarama said Singapore’s success in bringing together different ethnic backgrounds and religions “to forge a strong sense of inclusiveness and national unity” is a great lesson for nations such as Fiji.

“We have had our own challenges in this area but take inspiration from Singapore in embarking on a new direction ourselves as one nation and one people,” he said.

“It also sets the benchmark for nation building in terms of discipline, national resolve, zero tolerance for corruption and the pursuit of the highest standards of governance that Fiji also deeply admires and is emulating,” Prime Minister Bainimarama said.

Prime Minister Bainimarama took the opportunity to thank Prime Minister Hsien Loong on the relations shared between the two countries.

“My Government cherishes the close friendship we share with Singapore and will always strive to strengthen our long standing ties and the links between our peoples. We deeply appreciate Singapore’s contribution towards capacity building in Fiji and on this occasion, again convey our warmest thanks to your Government and the people of Singapore.”
