Students of Ratu Kadavulevu School on Tuesday had the rare opportunity to meet the Speaker to Parliament, Dr Jiko Luveni.

During the Parliament’s ‘Meet the Speaker’ outreach programme at the school, Dr Luveni spoke about her role, Parliament protocols and functions, the importance of the Parliament House and the challenges she faced.

“The biggest challenge I faced was that I needed to gain the respect of the male Members of Parliament. I needed to work hard to gain that respect and learn my Standing Orders well,” she said.

“The Opposition members are very good with how they scrutinize the issues raised by the Government members and as for the interjections I allow that to happen, as long as I can hear the Member of Parliament speaking.”

Dr Luveni also stated that it was important that when one is called to serve the nation, he or she was not there to survive financially, but to serve the nation.

The Civic Education and Media Unit of Parliament also prepared quiz questions and presented gift packs to students who answered the questions correctly.

Year 13 student Peni Yavala said he would love to contribute to the betterment of our country in the future.
