A family of seven in Qauia is now contemplating their future after a fire destroyed their home yesterday.

The fire is believed to have started at around 11am; leaving five children homeless. It is still unclear what caused the fire.

Litea Adisigamaicake, 11, was sad and still in a state of shock when Fiji Sun spoke to her.

“I was in the house with my four siblings when it caught fire; I noticed the smoke and flames coming from the kitchen,” she said.

“I quickly alerted my younger brothers and sister then I carried my four-month-old baby brother out of the house.”

The other siblings Laisa Delana, 5, Aisake Audave, 4, Waisale, 3, and four-month-old baby Jovilisi Tavakula were in the house at the time.

Witness and neighbour Seniyasi Matalewena, a prison officer, heard someone shouting that there was a fire, ran to the house to assist but saw no one.

“I only managed to recover the family’s television,” he said.

“If the windows did not have grills, I could have saved more things by throwing them out through the window.

“The fire burned really quick and nothing more could be saved. We’re just glad the children ran out of the house and are safe,” he said.

The children’s mother was still in shock and could not be interviewed.

Their father was at work at the time of the incident.

The National Fire Authority is conducting their investigation. To date there have been 51 house fires recorded between January and June this year.
