Colorful character of the First Landing George Henry Stock died on Thursday August 6 at Lautoka Hospital.

At the age of 68, Mr Stock’s death followed a short illness.

Mr Stock was the co-founder of the famous First Landing Beach Resort & Villas at Vuda Point.

Fiji Hotel and Tourism Association President Dixon Seeto said Mr Stock was very much part of the tourism industry having been in Fiji for a long time.

“He is certainly one of the more colourful characters in the industry in the West, We will all miss George!” he said.

The church service will be held at the John Wesley Church at Viseisei Village tomorrow at 10am.

The service will be followed by lunch and a celebration of his life on the Left Foot Island at First Landing Resort.

First Landing Beach Resort & Villas Landing said: “George became a Fiji citizen and has always considered Fiji and in particular Vuda as his true home for the second half of his life.

“George will always be remembered for his kind heart and being a real people person, treating everyone the same.

“He will be sadly missed by his family, friends and staff, management and landowners of First Landing Resort.”

 

Background

Mr Stock was originally from Scotland and grew up in Melbourne, Australia. He was a policeman and served in Vietnam with the Australian Army.

The Resort said Mr Stock’s career was in the meat industry and export seafood business and that brought Mr Stock to Fiji.

He came in the early 1980 to establish an export seafood business from the site that is now First Landing.

It said: “Seeing the potential for tourism in Vuda George acquired a tourism lease in 1992 over the site he had used for this export seafood business.”

The resort said in 1994 Mr Stock and his business partner Jim Dunn started construction of First Landing Resort which opened in 1996, the same year as the adjacent Vuda Marina.

“Since 1996 to the present George was fully involved with the development and operations at First Landing Resort,” It said

“He is known for the development of the famous ‘Left Foot Island’ which commemorates Vuda as the legendary landing site of the first Fijians,” added the resort.

 

Involvement

Mr Stock was on the board of the Lautoka Rural Local Authority.

He also had a very close and strong connection to the people of Vuda.

The resort said: “Mr Stock always had close ties with landowners and Viseisei Village, with his youngest daughter, Bronte, attending kindergarten there.

“George had a close friendship with the past Tui Vuda Ratu Joesefa Iloilo and the current Tui Vuda Ratu Kitione.”

Mr Stock was also known for his annual ANZAC Day celebrations at First Landing and was a keen golfer.
