Sara Du is part of a new breed of young environmental advocates backing the Government’s call to clean up the environment.

Even though the Saint Mary’s, Labasa, Year Eight  student was placed third at Tuesday’s National Environment Oratory competition, she felt her effort had not been in vain.

“I am feeling very excited because I came from Labasa to represent my school. My school had high hopes for me so I wanted to make them feel proud,” she said.

“I have been preparing for my oratory for two months and my parents and teacher were really supportive. I want to tell people not to throw their litter in the bins and those people should be punished who destroy our Mother Nature,” she said.

Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment Parveen Kumar said: “My ministry is targeting oratory as an opportunity to empower the hearts and minds of young people in Fiji. With the aim of fostering sustainable environment changes through display of communication skills, undertaking research and learning as the same time,” he said.

“This was the first ever oratory run by my ministry and this, we target to conduct it annually he said.”

The National Environment oratory competition was held at the Civic Centre in Suva.
