A family home has suffered destruction from fire for a second time at the Sabeto Village in Nadi.
The fire which started around midnight on Wednesday completely destroyed a two bedroom house belonging to Mesake Vulaono.
Witness Milinia Ene said the house occupant, 22-year-old Sailosi Wakawake, was in the house at the time the fire started.
“Villagers saw the fire which blazed from the back of the house where the kitchen was.
“They started calling out for Sailosi who was fast asleep inside the house, but luckily he woke up and managed to escape,” Ms Ene said.
“He is the eldest child in a family of seven and works to supports the family with his father who is a freelance carpenter.
“The family has lost everything in that fire just like they did in year 2000 when the fire damaged their house,” she said.
“They had recently rebuilt the front portion of the house which has again been turned into ashes and smoke within minutes.”
Firefighters were called but the house could not be saved.
“Luckily the children and the couple were not inside their house that night but at a relatives place.
“The four children including one daughter who goes to kindergarten lost all their school books and uniform in the blaze,” Ms Ene said.
Fiji Fire Authority chief executive officer John O’Connor confirmed the incident in Sabeto Village.
“It was a two bedroom wooden house and the team is conducting investigations to determine the cause of the fire; where the fire initiated from and what the cost of the damage is,” he said.
