With the success of last year’s Fijian International tournament, Professional Golfers Association (PGA) of Australia plans to make this year’s event bigger, better and bolder.

PGA of Australia director of commercial Stephen Ayles announced that Matt Kuchar who is ranked 16th in the world has agreed to take part in this year’s Fijian International.

“Last year was a great kick-off to the event; it was a great success on the course with the likes of Vijay Singh, Nick Price and the eventual winner Steve Jefferies,” Ayles said.

“It was also a great success off the course as well, with it being broadcasted to hundreds of millions of homes worldwide, which was the exposure that the golf course and Fiji got around the globe.

“We want to take this event to the next level and one of the ways in which we can do that is to include players who are genuinely ranked in the top 10 and 20 in the world.

“Kuchar, who has been a top 10 player in the world for several years and is currently ranked 16 in the world, has agreed to play in the tournament.

“He is the first of our Top 20 players for this event and basically he takes the event to a new level and over the next month we will announce some further players as well.”

Kuchar won the Players Championship in 2012 the TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida and also won the World Golf Championship – Accenture Match Play Championship in 2013 northwest of Tucson, USA.

Meanwhile, Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Faiyaz Siddiq Koya said Kuchar’s inclusion will grow the profile of the sport in the country and contribute greatly to the tourism economy.

“We are looking forward to this second Fijian International tournament and we are so happy to have Kuchar on,” Koya said.

“From the Governments perspective, we are actually very pleased to continue this partnership with PGA of Australia in bringing this second Fijian International tournament to Fiji and we expect to build on the success of last year’s tournament.

“The tourism industry is growing fast and the Fijian International is a great platform for tourism in Fiji, it’s really important from our perspective too that we are actually start pulling some big names in.”

The Fijian International will be played at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course on October 15-18.
