If you are a big fan of cats and kittens then you might not want to miss the Adopt-a-Cat Month at the Animals Fiji Nadi clinic.

At the end of July the charity organisation had a shelter population of 52 animals, 30 of which were cats and kittens. All cat and kitten adoptions are now 50 per cent off at $12.50 per adoption.

Clinic vet tech and shelter supervisor Giulia Giacomuzzo said this special deal had been brought in to help reduce the shelter’s high cat/ kitten population.

“The adoption rate of the cats is not as high as the dog and puppy adoptions. Cats in Fiji generally aren’t seen as much as a companion animal as dogs,” Mrs Giacomuzzo said.

“However, cats can be extremely affectionate and although they are more independent then dogs, they can be great additions to family besides just seen as ‘ratting animals.

“The cats and kittens come into Animals Fiji care, because members of the public who are unable to care for or find stray animals surrender them.

“However, of late the clinic had been unable to accept any further surrenders due to the high population of cats—hence the Adopt-a-Cat month promotion.”

An adoption fee for any animal at Animals Fiji is normally $25 per adoption. On average it costs the organisation, $316 per animal to feed, house, medicate, and desex (spay/neuter), before the cat or dog is adopted. The balance of $291 is subsidised by donations to the charity; Animals Fiji (operated by West Charity Trust Society) is a registered Fiji charity (# 889) under the Charitable Trusts Act (Cap. 67) with the focus of animal welfare.

One of their most critical goals is to reduce the epidemic of stray and diseased roaming dog and cat populations that plague villages, towns and rural areas, through de-sexing programmes. For information contact Casey Quimby, co-founder and managing trustee, on or 999-2334.
