The Minister for Finance, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, has urged the business community to develop an interest in the social sector.

Therefore, he pointed out it was important they realised how the various policies of Government are helping the business sector through assistance being provided to their staff members.

“When Government for example introduces domestic violence laws, builds a road, hospital, gives free water and electricity – it is in fact helping businesses,” he said.

“A lot of businesses do not see there are linkages.”

But, he said the reality was they have employees.

“If these employees are getting free medicine or are getting free water or there are laws to protect people from being assaulted in their homes – then these people will be happier employees when they come to work,” he said.

“Then their level of productivity goes up. So businesses must have an interest in the social sector – they cannot simply be narrow and mono-focussed.

“The Trade Policy Framework will be implemented over the next ten years.”

But, he stressed its successful implementation will require the contribution of all stakeholders: Government, the private sector and civil society.
