New port tariffs are expected to come into effect from August 24.

While objections have been raised by stakeholders on the new rates, Government believes the money through the tariffs will assist in the modernisation of our ports.

The Minister for Finance and Public Enterprises, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, yesterday highlighted the ports fees have not been reviewed for quite some time.

He said it was important to ensure that state-owned enterprises are able to progress to the next stage of infrastructure development.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said if the ports can be modernised as a result of this and efficiencies can be brought about, then all stakeholders, including the shipping lines and agents will benefit.

He said the divestment of Fiji Ports Corporation shares would hopefully see modernisation of our ports.

“At the moment, a third of the port cannot be used by container ships because it is so weak that it might fall,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

He said of the changes: “We want it for a particular reason, to be able to improve the port. We want to work with you. As part of the divestment, we have said to the partners that are going to come in that they must give us plan for six months.

“Then thereafter for implementation of either an alternative port site completely dedicated for shipping and also other industries that are linked to shipping.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said that would position Fiji better for transhipment.

“We have a better competitive edge in Fiji to bring in transhipment and hopefully even one day tranship to Australia and New Zealand,” he said.
