Some 17 Nadroga villagers have been taken into Police custody.

They are expected to appear in court today, facing sedition-related charges.

These arrests are in  relation to attempts by a  group to form a separate Nadroga Christian State, a move that was spearheaded by the late Ratu Osea Gavidi.

Five of the 17 were taken to Lautoka Police Station. More arrests are expected in coming days.

Police Commissioner Ben Groenewald has confirmed the arrest of the villagers.

He said they had earlier been taken in for questioning a few months back.

His office received an all clear for charges to be laid by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions recently, after which the 17 were rounded up.

This is another group of rebels who had been attempting to allegedly form a separate Christian state.

These groups-one in Ra, another in Nadroga and one more in Navosa had allegedly gone to the extent of launching their own flags and people had taken oaths as Government Ministers as well.

Those involved in the Ra case have already fronted court and as investigations continue, more are expected to be taken in around the country.s.
