Keeping students in rural areas by improving infrastructure is a priority for the Minister for Education Mahendra Reddy.

Mr Reddy, on a recent tour of Kadavu, noted the disparity in levels of infrastructure between urban and rural schools.

He said this was important for the Voreqe Bainimarama Government to focus on for the next three to four years.

He made this statement following his trip last week to Kadavu for the principal and head teacher’s conference.

“This issue has resulted in parents by passing these rural schools and are now sending their children to urban schools,”Mr Reddy said.

“To undertake the basic maintenance work we will need about $24.5million but if we really want a first -hand infrastructure we would probably need close to $60m and this would include all interior and maritime schools,”he said.
