The Saraswati College Under-17 and U19 football teams are bracing for a tough competition over the next few days.

The teams are taking part in the Vodafone Fijian Secondary Schools Soccer Championship at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori.

Coach Nathan Shivan said the tournament was a really good way for them to develop their young players.

“It’s a very good competition in terms of development.Shivan said,

“The Fiji Football Association concentrate on the national teams,” said.

“The teachers are working very hard at the ground level developing the youths and overseeing their progress.”

The U19 is the defending champions and they had a good start beating newcomers Swami Vivekananda College (SVC) 4-0.

Shivan said while they want to retain the U19 title, it would be difficult.

“We managed to get a good win against SVC but that is just the start, we plan to take each game as it comes,” he said.

“We are preparing and working our way towards the title and trying our best to retain the title.

“Our U17 squad, however, is a good side as well as we have been developing them for a number of years.”
