Campbell Shipping says it is not opposing the increase in ports fees and charges, but rather, the way it has been implemented is a concern.

Campbell Shipping managing director, Ian Campbell, made the comments to clear the air on the new ports fees and charges which comes into effect from August 24.

“Agents are not opposed to a tariff increase, however, the increase is huge over 50 to 100 per cent and sudden,” he said.

“Any increase should be gradual and have a six month lead up time. Current freight or charter rates are already locked in for the next six months and to increase rates suddenly is a poor reflection of the port and the country.”

Mr Campbell stated that as local shipping agents, they were thinking about the average person on the street.

“Shipping Lines, many of whom have been trading to Fiji for over 20 years, have no option but to increase rates or terminate services. Either way, imports or exports will be affected,” he said.

“Fiji Ports last year paid out a record dividend and workers received bonuses. So one begs the question why such huge and sudden increases now.

“Cost of local purchases are already expensive expect this to increase. Exporters are forever asking for lower freight rates so they can compete in the overseas markets.”

“Substantial increased freight rates will have devastating effect on our exports and to remain competitive, companies will cut jobs.

“We Shipping Agents, through our association, are in the frontline forever trying to hold costs but can only do much.”

“Substantial increased freight rates will have devastating effect on our exports and to remain competitive, companies will cut jobs.
