Luisa Kotoisuva’s visit to Suva this year is her very first.

The Year Nine student of Ratu Finau Secondary School comes from the island of Tubou, Lakeba, in the Lau Group.

She accompanied her grandmother who is here for the Methodist Church annual conference.

“I am here with my grandmother Salanieta Makutu and seeing the tall buildings is really new for me compared to the normal houses we have back in the island,” the 14-year-old said.

“Seeing more than 10 cars passing on the road within 10 minutes is something that surprises me.”

Luisa said they have cars back on the Island but only two cars could be seen going past after an hour compared to the busy street she saw here in Suva.

“The food here is way too new for me and most of the time I eat without knowing the name of the food I eat,” she said.

“I have never dreamt of leaving the island any time now but I’d love to come and stay in Suva after completing high school. The one thing that surprised me the most is the way my peers dress up and they already own a phone, which is just way too fancy for me,” she said.

She prefers her ‘sulu’ and ‘jaba’ along with her relaxed island life than the busy streets here in the capital.

“I am happy being here in Suva and seeing the beautiful buildings and nice surroundings, which I will cherish and talk about when I go back to my family,” she said.
