MV Westerland Meets Northern Demand
MV Westerland.

The month of August is usually the busiest of the year for domestic shipping, especially during the two weeks holiday.

The demand for inter-island ferry services is usually high during this period.

Shipping operators have carefully planned their schedules to cater for the demand without having to exploit the basic and consumer rights of travellers.

For Bligh Water Shipping Limited that provides overnight services aboard the MV Westerland that serves the Natovi to Savusavu route, the company said August is an economical month for all stakeholders.

Company chief executive officer, William Vulivuli said personal safety of passengers is number one priority for them considering the adverse weather conditions.

“As for services, all bus operators, taxis and rural transport operators, business and shop owners also benefit from this rise in travelling demand, which stimulates economic activity for all concerned,” Mr Vulivuli said.

He said the demand for their service in the shipping industry is driven by activity and seasons which includes all holidays and general activities, like church gathering, sports tournaments, and the normal cultural and social activities.

“As for the Savusavu-Natovi route, we definitely have a demand with Bligh Water Shipping mainly servicing the Cakaudrove corridor and part of the Macuata province through Savusavu.

“This is mainly to transport general food supplies for Savusavu town and coastal communities, with the additional normal travelling public.”
