Stall owners at the 2015 Vodafone Hibiscus Festival are suggesting another date for the carnival to avoid a rainy and muddy event.

The ground condition at the Carpenters foreshore is beginning to look like a swamp amid the continuous rain since the festival opened last Saturday.

The stall owners are complaining about the poor ground condition, no proper drainage, no power supply to their stalls, very unhygienic toilet facilities and despite having taps, they have to bring water from their homes.

Phone calls and text messages sent to the Vodafone Hibiscus group chairman yesterday, Hirdesh Prasad, remained unanswered.

Farid Shah of Shah’s Amusement Rides said they have been customers with the Hibiscus group for over a long time.

“We have three rides, sizzler, merry go round and kids ride every year,” he said.

“However because of the ground condition we have not done any business. We have spent over $10,000 for the ground fees and we are still paying to get planks near our stalls so that people can walk around.

“Every year during his time we have rainy weather, maybe the Hibiscus committee should contemplate another date during the year when the weather is fine.”

He said the ground committee had told them to take their rides and go if they wished to because they had no preplanned situation in place to cater for the rain and for the muddy ground.

He said their request to extend the carnival was quashed. Another stall owner Jyoti Lal said it was difficult to make sales with a ground condition as such. Other stall owners have also made similar remarks. Some are even suggesting that the festival be held at a time when the weather was better.
