Teenage Girl Says Pastor She Trusted Tried To Have Sex With Her
Pastor Jone Conikeli is accused of touching two girls he met through friends and family, and of trying to have sex with one of them.

A teenage girl let a man who tried to have sex with her into her home when she was alone because he was a pastor and she trusted him, a court has heard.

Jone Draiva Conikeli, 42, from Stokes Valley, who is a pastor at the Kingdom Ambassador International Fellowship church’s Wellington chapter, is alleged to have touched two girls he met through friends and family, and to have tried to have sex with one of them last year.

He denies the charges.

In a police interview played to a Wellington District Court jury on Tuesday, the 15-year-old girl said she allowed Conikeli into her home while nobody else was there.

She had been in the shower when he arrived and, after letting him in, he followed her to her bedroom and wanted to kiss her. She said no. He took her towel off and then lay her down, took off her underwear and tried to have sex with her, she said.

She managed to push him off.

Her father later asked her if something had happened, but she had been scared to tell her parents, she said.

During a visit to Conikeli’s house, she said he took her to a toilet, locked the door, took his pants off and asked her for oral sex.  She said no.

On another occasion, he tried to touch her breasts, she said.

Another girl, who was 12 at the time, told Conikeli’s lawyer, Chris Nicholls, she had still been grieving for her mother when Conikeli set her father up with another woman.

When her father went back to Fiji to meet the woman, only weeks after her mother died, she was angry and felt abandoned.

The woman later became her stepmother. She said she tried to get on with her, but was unable to.  She then went to live with Conikeli.

She alleged he touched her breasts during games, or touched her genitals while she was supposed to be asleep.

She told Nicholls she was not angry with Conikeli for setting her father up, and had not made up the allegations or colluded with the older girl to make the allegations.

Conikeli has pleaded not guilty to two charges of assault with intent to commit sexual violation, two of doing an indecent act on a person under 16 and three of doing an indecent act on a child between January and September last year. The trial is expected to end this week.
