Cakaudrove’s Shanal Savneet Maharaj wants to play for the Flying Fijians and is already working hard towards it.

He had to sell taro and yaqona (kava) with his Cakaudrove U13 team to travel to Suva for the 2015 Rewa Galaxy Kaji rugby tournament.

“It was an exciting journey for me we had to sell Taro and Yaqona to come to Suva,” Maharaj said.

Rugby was a hobby for Maharaj and becoming a rugby star was always the dream of the year eight student of Batiri District School when he started his rugby career in year seven.

“I wanted to become one of Fiji’s best Indo-Fijian that will wear the white jersey and represent Fiji,” Maharaj said.

Coming from a family of four and being the youngest in his family Maharaj said he was not the only one that loved rugby.

“It is also my older brother that is playing rugby in Vanua Levu and is in the Wailevu team in Vanua Levu.

“This has always been a challenge for me taking up this rugby career but at the same time I love what I am doing because I know if I cannot make in academic there is something like rugby there to back me up.

“I will continue to play rugby and see where it takes me to. I am not afraid of the tough challenge that is there for me because I know this makes me strong,” he said.
