The Vodafone Fijian side thumped Tonga 5-0 in a friendly match at Govind Park last night.

Fiji captain Osea Vakatalesau was impressed with his team performance.

“We are happy with the win as we need to improve the ranking but not overall happy with the game plan.

“We just took Tonga lightly as there were more chances at goal which we could have done better. Tonga did surprise our defence at some stages of the match and we thank them for coming this far,” Vakatalesau said.

The Fijians with the leadership of Osea Vakatalesau proved themselves too strong for the visitors as midfielder Malakai Tiwa scored a double for the hosts.

Ba’s Alvin Singh, Napolioni Qasevakatini and Vakatalesau also scored a goal each. The Fijians executed well in attack and defence structure which allowed their dominance.

Tonga captain Mark Uhatahi said they knew the Fijians would come out strong but they gave their best.

“We knew that Fiji would be tough with their vast experience as their standard is higher than ours back home.

“We thought they will score more but we gave our best. We had some new players in the team and they gave their best,” Uhatahi said.
