Pay processing can be awkward for some employers, however, there is a way to avoid this, says Phil Richards. Mr Richards is among international participants in the CPA Australia-Fiji Branch Congress at the Sheraton Fiji Resort, Denarau.

Mr Richards has launched a new payroll company in New Zealand called Smart Payroll. This company processes pay for many New Zealand employers.

He said: “Payrolls are compulsory and so it’s definitely a good business to get involved in.”

Mr Richards has encouraged the business community in Fiji to consider tapping into this business.

He said: “You will always need to pay your employee, so you can never fail in this business. It can also help the human resource team in your existing businesses.”

Smart Payroll currently process NZ$3 billion per annum of payroll in New Zealand. The company has about 15,000 business clients.

The power of technology plays the vital role to help the business, he explained.

“So it’s really cool at the press of one button, you make all the calculations.

“We pay all the people and we do all the filing with the IRD so all of those three things happen at the press of one button,” he said.

Idea conception

Mr Richards and a partner were given an opportunity to do something in the payroll space and that was how it began.

“I’d been watching what Salesforce (an innovative American company) was doing in the United States which was basically the pioneer of cloud products,” he said.

“Then we decided to take desktop software and put it into what we now call the cloud so that’s really how we came up with the idea.”

He added there’s a lot of paying points in payroll that need to be solved so the software did exactly that.
