Pacific Sprint King Banuve Tabakaucoro finished first in his 100 metres preliminary rounds clocking 10.50seconds at the 15th IAAF World Championships in China.

The win takes Banuve through to the next round. This was the second best time recorded in the heats behind Oman’s Barakat Mubarak who finished his race with a time of 10.31 seconds.

Tabakaucoro raced alongside Hassan Saaid (10.56), Md Fakhri Ismail (10.73), Mark Anderson (10.84), Joao De Barros (11.07), La Shondra David Mosa’ati (11.08), Mohamed Lamine Dansoko (11.31), Wang Kuong Leong (11.31) and M. Dagiero (11.81).

Athletics Fiji chief development officer Joseph Rodan (Jnr) said the World Championship was a build-up for Tabakaucoro.

“Basically the main focus of him participating in there is for him to have as much competition as he could and try to achieve Olympic time in Rio 2016,” Rodan said.

“The more the competition the better, this is a huge beneficial for him. We are trying to get him to meet the required time which is 10.16.

“We are optimistic he has done a lot of hard work. We really need to strengthen our athletes and this is a way they get to grow physically and mentally.

“We thank Shop N Save Supermarket who has been sponsoring the athletes; without them the athletes wouldn’t be participating in competitions like this,” he said.
