Peter Amputch has been hailed a hero for risking his life to rescue students trapped in a crashed bus in Navua last Friday.
In the process, he suffered electric shock and was rushed to CWM Hospital in Suva after he was initially seen at Navua Hospital.
Emotional students rescued described him as a hero and were grateful to him for rescuing them.
Mr Amputch, a logistic assistant at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), is under observation in hospital.
Mr Amputch’s wife, Anisi, said her husband never thought twice about going for the rescue.
The bus, was carrying students from Serua, teachers and officials who were returning home after the Rewa Galaxy Kaji Rugby competition in Suva. Retired school teacher Teresia Makosoi Rounds, died after the bus hit a power pole when it veered off the road.
“We were all following each other back home. From a distance we could see the bus and the kids in their uniforms and we knew straight away it was the Serua kids, so we pulled onto the side and when the students saw us, they started crying so we split to try and get them out,” said an emotional Mrs Amputch.
“But there was a child that was on top of the bus screaming continuously for help asking him (my husband) if he can get him out with his friends and that was when he went in. He brought them down and went in again to get another child and that was when the incident happened.
‘He didn’t even think twice to assess what the situation was, but it was the child. He took all the risks just so he could rescue them.
“He is getting better compared to the last two days,” Mrs Amputch added of Mr Amputch’s condition.
