Nausori Special School has thanked Government for recognising the educational needs of children with special needs. As of next term, 51 students from the school will learn computing skills, thanks to a donation of a new set of computers worth $6000 by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.

The computers were handed-over by Minister Rosy Akbar earlier this month.

“This assistance is given with the hope to help these children excel in their computing studies. Assistance like this ensures that children with special needs are given equal opportunities to prosper academically. We will continue to reach out and empower children with special needs,” Ms Akbar said.

School headteacher Sofia Waqanidrola thanked Government for the assistance.

“Starting next term, computer studies will be incorporated into our school curriculum.  The teachers will provide them with daily computer lessons for an hour or so. This assistance has motivated the students to develop computing skills that will help them in their future career.

“It is also through the ministry’s assistance, that one of our students recently participated in the two-week Special Olympics in Los Angeles. He came back with two silvers and one bronze medal. We thank Rosy Akbar for the swift action taken to address our concern. Some of the students who were not getting bus fare assistance are now being assisted.

“The recent assistance that we have received from the ministry, reflects on the Fijian Government’s commitment to build an inclusive and enabling environment for children with disabilities,” Mrs Waqanidrola said.

The Ministry, in partnership with Courts Fiji Limited, has also provided four electrical and two hand sewing machines the schools vocational students to learn tailoring.
