Fiji Sugar Corporation is working with farmers to bridge the sugarcane supply gap which exists on certain days.

FSC executive chairman, Abdul Khan, said there is a good supply of cane to the mills except on Sundays and some evenings.

However, despite this, he said they have seen improvements in certain aspects of the various mills and on the whole, all the mills were performing as good as the past year.

Information dissemination

Meanwhile, National Farmers Union president Surendra Lal has stressed the importance of making information available to farmers on production figures of each of the mills.

“If there is any changes the farmers can work together to rearrange their harvesting programme and speed up with the supply,” he said.

He also confirmed there was labour shortage in Labasa.

“Farmers’ sons shows no interest of work and so fathers have to hire labourers from different villages to work in the farm,” Mr Lal said.

“We all need to share information and work together in order to have a much better crushing season compared to 2014,” he added.
