Government is expected to finalise a date for the relocation of people living in Nanuku Settlement in Vatuwaqa.

In an interview with Fiji Sun, people living in the settlement said they had been informed by Government officials that they would be moving to a land allocated by Government along the Nasinu-Nausori corridor.

Settlement committee president Tupou Vakaloloma of Vanuabalavu in Lau confirmed a meeting with officials from the Prime Minister’s office informed them that they will be relocated to Kalabu but the date has not been determined.

“We have been told that the relocation will take place in September this year,” Mr Vakaloloma said.

He said there were more than 300 households in the settlement with two to three families under one roof.

“Most people have been living here for generations probably around 40 to 50 years and I believe that the landowner wants to subdivide this area which is why we are being relocated.

“For most people living in the area, relocation is the best option as they have been requesting the move for a long time because of the bad conditions during rainy weather,” Mr Vakaloloma said.
