The Fiji Police Wives National Volleyball and Netball tournament was opened by the Commissioner of Police, Ben Groenewald at Holy Family Primary School grounds, Labasa, yesterday.

The annual event is three years old.

Groenewald advised policemen to support their wives as they played a very vital role.

“Police officers, encourage and support your wives as they participate in this event each year,” Groenewald said.

To the wives, he said “Go out and play for yourself, for your coach and for your team.

“One person’s performance can affect the whole team and so it is important to do team work.

“Nelson Mandela once said and I quote, sports can be a diversion, sports can be a hobby and, for a fortunate few, sports can change the world,” Groenewald said.

He encouraged them to be dedicated and selfless and enjoy sports.

The competition ends today.

Fiji Police Force Wives president Silina Tudravu said there were 39 teams participating in this tournament.
