The Osea Vakatalesau-captained Vodafone Fijian side defeated American Samoa 6-0 during their friendly international match at Prince Charles Park in Nadi last night.

Captain Vakatalesau said the match was tough.

“American Samoa was more physical compared to Tonga. It was bit tougher as they had their players playing in the United States but the boys did their best in the second spell,” he said.

The national side did not find it easy in the beginning as the Polynesians held off a tough challenge but did not last long as Taione Kerevanua scored their first goal through a penalty goal in the 8th minute.

Pressure mounted in the 31st minute which saw national U20 rep Kolinio Sivoki and American Samoa Demetrius Beauchamp being red-carded for violent conduct.

Referee Andrew Achari stopped the game when players and officials ended up in a punch-up and match was resumed after four minutes.

The host side continued their dominance displaying good attacking pattern and had a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Malakai Tiwa extended Fiji’s lead in the 54 minute with a 20-yard freekick which was untouched by the visitor’s goalie Pita Falevalu.Seven minutes later Napolioni Qasevakatini came off the bench and scored two goals in the 61st and 80th minute. Vakatalesau and Tevita Waranivalu scored a goal each in the 74th minute and 71st minute respectively.

American Samoa captain Larry Mana’o said it was a good game.

“We did not expect the score-line to be like this. We started well but then Fiji dominated the game in the second spell. Fiji dominated the game but we had a good first-half,” Mana’o said.
