Fiji needs diplomats who are passionate to serve and promote Fiji and protect its interest and citizens overseas, says the Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Esala Nayasi.

Mr Nayasi was closing the 8th Induction Course for Diplomatic Service at the former Parliamentary complex at Veiuto, Suva, yesterday.

“Diplomats who can lobby and drive down barriers and build relationships for the greater good of our country,” Mr Nayasi said.

“After the successful election last year, Fiji has been actively engaged at bilateral, multilateral and international affairs.

“As Fiji’s gateway to the world, the responsibility of negotiating and integrating Fiji into the national community falls largely on the capabilities of our diplomats.

“Let me congratulate you all for successfully completing the course and for showing interest in the diplomatic field.

“Since its inception in 2011, this training has boosted Fiji’s diplomatic service capabilities and competence by equipping officers like you with the right skills and knowledge.

“I am confident that you all have gained valuable insight into the topics that has been covered over the week. I am glad to know that this year the programme has been extended to include the participation of youth volunteers and youth ambassadors.

“The 21st Century presents the dynamic landscape of international relations in both regional and international arenas.

“The deepening  levels of globalisation and transnational activities multi-polar, world financial in economic crisis, peace and in security issues and Trans board threats among others are some of the issues that today’s diplomats have to be well versed with.”

He said diplomats must have a good understanding of their countries’ foreign policies, rules of engagement and possess negotiating skills.
