The Nadi businessman allegedly involved in the importation of illicit drugs will reappear in the High Court in Suva on September 3 for ruling on his bail application.

Praneel Chandran Reddy, 36, who was charged with one count of importing illicit drugs namely amphetamine, appeared before Judge Priyantha Fernando at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

It was alleged that Reddy unlawfully imported parcels containing amphetamine weighing 79.3kg said to be worth $100million.

There was a robust argument between Reddy’s lawyer Babu Singh and assistant director of Public Prosecutions, Michael Delany on Reddy’s bail application.

Mr Singh yesterday argued that his client ought to be granted bail because he had been disciplined during the 10 days of interrogation following his arrest earlier this month.

He said the investigating officer, Corporal Isikeli’s affidavit was weak and did not have any merits.

The affidavit by Cprl Isikeli said Reddy was highly likely to abscond bail.

Mr Delany also informed Justice Fernando that the granting of Reddy’s bail application had some unacceptable risks.

Mr Singh strongly refuted this and said he wanted the court to view the granting of the bail application on individuality rather than generality.

He told Justice Fernando that it doesn’t mean that his client was not to be granted bail because it was a serious offence, however they should consider it on merit.

Mr Singh also submitted that Reddy had given his address to get furniture from Australia and not drugs from Mexico as was also said by Mr Delany in court yesterday.

Justice Fernando ordered that the substantive matter be called on September 18 and the Director of Public Prosecutions to file the information.

He adjourned the case to September 3 for the ruling on Reddy’s bail application.
