Many a times our focus is so much on the large exporters that we forget about the smaller exporters who also contribute significantly towards our economy.

One such exporter is Nelesh Kamal Dutt, a sole trader trading as Nelesh Kamal Company in Siberia, Labasa.

Mr Dutt has won three awards in two different categories at the Westpac Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year Awards and the most recent one being at the past year’s awards.

His company won the 2014 Bank of Baroda Small Exporter of the Year Award.

Mr Dutt established his export business in 2006 and started exporting in 2009 to New Zealand and the US market.

He only deals with exports exporting major commodity such as kava and Fijian grown, Fijian crafted and Fijian made products.

Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year Awards won by NELESH KAMAL Company:

  • 2014: Small Exporter of the Year Awards
  • 2013: Small Exporter of the Year Awards
  • 2011: Medium Exporter of the Year Awards

Testimonial

Winning the three awards, Mr Dutt said, has helped him grow his business as well as diversified into other local products from North.

And now Mr Dutt is ready to tap into other new markets for exports as well.

Mr Dutt will once again be applying in the 2015 Westpac Prime Minister’s Exporter of the Year Awards.

His advice to other exporters: “They should apply for the awards in their respective categories.

“It is a challenge in applying but you get more experience in improving in your business.”

Focus now

Mr Dutt said his focus now is on export and the quality of the products being exported.

“I am already supplying to US to my client who is wholesaler and distributor. But I am also looking for markets in other countries where Kava is not banned,” he said.
