Jai Chauhan made a clean sweep in the boys’ events of the Rising Star Table Tennis competition held at the Fiji Table Tennis Association (FTTA) in Laucala yesterday.

The nine-year-old won the Under-12, 15 and U18 grades while Ruta Ioane scooped up the U15 and U18 girls’ category as well as Loata Neli Duncan who won the U12 girls event and was runners-up in the U15 grade.

Shahina Pal was runners-up in the U12 and U18 girls’ grades while Gideon Rodan was runners up for the U12, U15 and U18 boys’ grades.

Fiji Table Tennis coach Brett Clarke said FTTA organised a successful junior camp for the kids prior to the tournament.

“Through the second week of the school holidays, Fiji Table Tennis Association conducted a successful junior table tennis camp for children aged between 8-16 years.

“The camp was conducted by International coaches and Fu Jun, along with local Fijian Development Officers (and myself),” Clarke said.

“During the camp, students learned the skills of table tennis such as backhand and forehand. The camp was also an important lead-up to the Rising Star competition which is designed to help identify the best table tennis talent in Fiji.

“Nine year old, Jai Chauhan, managed a clean sweep of all the boys events, which is an amazing achievement for such a young player. Ruta Ioane also played exceptionally well winning the Under-18 and 15 girls events.”

The Hibiscus Table Tennis competition will start tomorrow at the Fiji Table Tennis Association in Laucala, Suva.
