Labasa people turned out in numbers yesterday to give their views on what Government should focus on in next year’s Budget.

They attended the National Budget consultation held by the Attorney-General and Minister for Finance Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

Such consultations are a first for the nation.

Government has been reaching out to people from all walks of life to ask their views on the Budget.

Previous governments had confined their discussions on the National Budget to businesshouses and a select few.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum stressed that like governments around the world, the Fijian Government had limited funds. However, they were keen to get people’s views on how best to utilise these funds to better the lives of all Fijians.

He said while things were not going to be done overnight, they would, nonetheless, be done.

People also took this opportunity to discuss with Mr Sayed-Khaiyum and his team other issues affecting them.

“I am aware of the problems the people at the consultation highlighted and my team would look into them and see how we can help them,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

Issues highlighted that people want Government to focus on:

  • Health
  • Education
  • Infrastructure- roads, electricity and water.

Those present also spoke highly of the initiative that Government has undertaken to get their views for the National Budget.

Many said that this made them feel responsible towards their country and also made them feel that they had a say in the direction Fiji would take.
