Talks are underway for an airport to be built between Savusavu and Labasa to cater for the growing demands in the Northern Division.

Attorney-General and Finance Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum revealed some details of this plan during consultations on the 2016 National Budget in Labasa yesterday.

His explanation came following a request by the Labasa Chamber of Commerce and Industries president Satish Kumar to extend the runway at Waiqele Airport.

“This request has been long overdue and we request if night landing provisions can also be made,’ Mr Kumar said.

He said once this was in place the flow of foreign investors and business growth to the North would increase.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said he was aware of their plight.

“Savusavu Tourism Association (STA) has also been requesting for this for a long time and I am aware of it,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“We have identified a piece of land in between Labasa and Savusavu to build an airport so that both can benefit,” he added.

When Labasa’s Waiqele Airport was built, it was constructed between a river bend, leaving no space for further extension of the runway.
