Hare Krishna Movement devotees will this week be handing out special offerings to the poor as they celebrate Lord Krishna’s birthday, says devotee Rajesh Maharaj.

He said this during the celebration of the birth of the Hindu deity Krishna held at the Sri Radha Golokabihari Temple in Toorak in Suva yesterday.

“Today marks the beginning of Krishna Janmashtami meaning advent or arrival of Lord Krishna from the spiritual kingdom,” he said.

“The main purpose of his arrival is to destroy the miscreant or bad elements that are within us and within the society.”

He said the wonderful arrival also re-established religion and strengthened his devotees.

Mr Maharaj said the celebration falls on the month of Shravan which is between the month of August and September on the Vedic calendar.

“It is an eight-day celebration that begins with the appearance of Lord Balram today and he is Lord Krishna’s elder brother.

“He represents spiritual energy and on this day Hare Krishna devotees share about God’s glory, his past, sing devotional songs and make special offerings of foods and sweets to invited guests who take part in this celebration,” he said.

Mr Maharaj said they dressed their lord with new clothes brought in from India.

“Dressing our lord with fine clothes is like our gift to the lord and we believe that the lord is a person; he manifest himself to us in the form of a deity.

“This celebration is an open invitation to all, we don’t discriminate races, colour, religion and we also encourage children and youths to take part in devotional activities without any discrimination,” he said.
