The Sands of Time charity fundraiser, held to support the improvement of the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park, was a success.

The event, held at the Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa, Yanuca Island last Saturday, raked in more than $26,000 alone from live auctions. The total amount collected will be revealed today.

Chairman of the National Trust of Fiji Dr Robin Yarrow thanked those who were part of the event in the push for the national park to be dedicated a World Heritage Site.

“It’s a unique  site which combines landscape found nowhere else in Fiji and the region and it is the most visited of the National Trust’s eight sites and flagship property on Viti Levu,” he said.

He said the National Trust’s main objective for the site is for continued improvements – to ensure all visitors, residents and tourist alike, have an enjoyable, meaningful and safe experience.

“Tourist is particular are increasingly interested to learn more about Fiji’s rich heritage. We are grateful for the recent Government grant which has funded our visitor centre extension.”

He said Government funding cannot be expected for all the upgrading – the fence and gate project and mini museum plus a possible food and coffee outlets.

He thanked The Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort and Spa and their Bilo Bar members, President Ratu Epeli Nailatikau, Turaga Na Ka Levu Ratu Kinijoji Vosailagi, and the corporate companies that supported the event.

Shangri-La Fijian Resort and Spa general manager Craig Powell said there was a lot of work to be done and this gesture would certainly make sure that their objective was achieved.
