Ravi Nair won the Professional Security Services Quarter Mile Drag Race at Taunovo Bay Airstrip at Pacific Harbour, Deuba yesterday.

Nair, who drove a Mazda RX-7, clocked  10:69 seconds with Lawrence Ah-Sam, driving a Holden Camaro, recording 11:83 secs and Vicky Nath finishing third on a RF-7 with a time of 12:12 secs.

In the women’s category, Shafiza Ali won in 17:56 secs in a Chevy Pick Up while Faiz Wazil won the Open Diesel grade driving an Audi.

Nair, who dedicated the win to this three month old son, said winning was not easy.

“I told my son in the morning that I will bring him a trophy and this is for him,” Nair said.

“You have to apply speed of above 200kph and I went 220kph which is not my personal best but just enough to win.

“It won’t be easy retaining the title but it’s definitely a challenge I look forward to.”

Meanwhile, Fiji Car Club president Raizal Haniff said with the new format in place, racers adjusted well.

“We’ve a new format in place which is the dial in time,”he said.

“You have to know the potential of your car and based on that you dial in what time or category you want to fall under,” Haniff said.

“The idea of this new format is to teach the racers who to handle their cars, it’s not purely about speed all the time. We want them to know how to handle their cars so the response has been really good.

“We had 35 cars which is an increase so the interest is slowly there for the sport, which is something we are grateful for.”

The Fiji Car Club’s next event is the Drag Wars in two weeks at the  same venue.
