Kartaram Cleans Up

Residents of Kartaram Estate in Votualevu, Nadi, got together last weekend to remove rubbish dumped along roadsides.

The residents have formed an interim association called the Kartaram Residence Association and this is where the initiative drove from.

Association chairman Matt Wilson said Fiji had been polluted with rubbish.

“Our job is to improve the amenities, the surroundings in this area and one of the first priorities is to have a clean-up,” Mr Wilson said.

“We have a problem here and we are starting to remove rubbish that is illegally dumped at the side of the road.

“We want to make Kartaram Estate the cleanest place in Fiji and it is important to get younger generation involved in this healthy practice.

“There is a large area which is supposed to be used as a park now. It’s overgrown so if the Government would like to assist us to clean it, we would be thrilled.

“This is a lovely residential area. It’s a beautiful place to live in and we want to make it a better place. We can start by getting rid of the rubbish,” Mr Wilson said.

He said about 300 people lived in the area and garbage was collected once a week by a contractor.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama recently expressed his disgust at the indiscriminate dumping of rubbish around Fiji.  He described it as a  ‘national embarassment’ and urged young people to take the lead and clean up Fiji.

A resident Mahesh Chand said, “We do not have any garbage collection here but the private contractors do come in and we pay $3 a bag which is a bit expensive.

“They come once a week and they normally come around 7–8pm which is inconvenient to the people and very hard.

“Let’s make Khartaram and the entire country beautiful and clean,” Mr Chand said.
