Boxers at the Jittu Boxing Stable in Raiwaqa are grateful to promoter Praneel Dass for putting up the September 26 promotions at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.

Speaking to SUNport yesterday trainer Marika Yalimaiwai said most of his boxers earn their living through the sport.

“This promotion has brought a ray of hope to the boxing fraternity in Jittu,” he said.

“We are grateful to the Boxing Commission of Fiji and to Mr Dass for making it happen. It’s going to be a night of great fights as the boxers will be out to establish their mark.”

Yalimaiwai pointed out the Jittu boxers who have signed-up for the programme are veteran lightweight and 2001 Oceania Championship bronze medallist, Etuate Kofi, stylish welterweight Ulaiasi Qalomai who once drew with middleweight champion Abhay Chand and World Boxing Foundation Asia Pacific light heavyweight champion Sakiusa Mekemeke.

Qalomai faces an uphill battle against Fiji welterweight champion Junior ‘The Razor’ Farzan Ali, Kofi takes on upcoming superstar Sebastian Singh while Lovoni native from Ovalau, Mekemeke faces hard-hitting Opeti Tagi of Serea, Naitasiri.

“It has been made clear to the boxers during training that they must do well if they are to move on with their career. They are all fighting champion boxers and they must rise to the occasion come September 26 for their progress and for fans to get their monies worth.”

Yalimaiwai has called on boxing fans to come out in numbers and support the work towards the revival of professional boxing in the country.
