Keeping the public safe from anti-microbial resistance organisms is a top priority for Fijian public health officials.

The Ministry of Health Acting Permanent secretary for health and medical services Dr Meciusela Tuicakau wants to strengthen laboratory capacity, surveillance and resources to manage the growing threat.

In layman’s terms, these organisms have developed resistance to antibiotics, putting public health at risk.

It has been a challenge and concern for the World Health Organisation (WHO) in recent years.

“Antimicrobial resistance makes it harder to eliminate infections from the body as existing drugs become less effective,” he said.

Dr Tuicakau has been meeting stakeholders to deliberate, share and discuss ways of combating AMR nationally.

“At national level, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services has taken this issue as one of priority.

Fiji has proposed establishment of a national committee on AMR this year.

Last Thursday, the National Anti – Microbial Resistance workshop was held at Warwick Hotel.
