New Number To Shame Litterbugs

A free texting platform will soon be introduced to name and shame litterbugs, says Minister for Environment, Parveen Kumar.

He said the texting platform would be useful for areas where people continued to dump their rubbish.

This is following the launch of the national name and shame campaign last month by the Mr Kumar. The incentives for the campaign include people applying for a percentage of the fine, if they catch the offenders in the act.

“We have already done the framework for the name and shame and we have asked municipal councils to set up the same type of framework as this will make it easier for people to text in pictures in order to highlight and discourage people from dumping rubbish carelessly,”Mr Kumar said.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has describing the amount of litter in Fiji as a ‘national shame’ and urged young people to report offenders.

The Department of Environment will embark on a two-phase programme directed at bringing the full force of the law on those who litter.
