The Government continues to assess areas of deployment by members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama has assured this as tension escalates in areas like the troubled Sinai amidst infiltration by so-called Islamic State fighters.

His comments come after two Fijians serving with the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) in Sinai were injured by an explosive device.

The Prime Minister and former RFMF commander said:

“We are assessing the situation in the Middle East and they are all good and safe.”

Able Seaman Akariva Sigawale and Corporal Rupeni Masibalavu were in a patrol vehicle that hit by an improvised explosive device in the Southern part of Northeast Sinai.

They were on a routine water and ration supply run to one of the Fijian locations in the southern part of Northeast Sinai.

Following the incident they were airlifted to Israel and are recovering well at Beersheba Hospital.

Last week’s incident is the second recently faced by Fijian soldiers serving in the Sinai.

In June, six mortar rounds landed in the camp housing Fijian peacekeepers.

The Fijians were caught in the exchange of fire between so-called Islamic State forces and the Egyptian military.

The incident come amidst escalating tension in the Sinai as infiltrating Islamic State fighters take on Egyptian troops in deadly clashes.

Mr Bainimarama said Government was always concerned about the safety of Fijian troops serving in the Middle East.

“These are some of the things that we cannot go without, the security concern,” he said.
