15 New Cases Reported

A recent Ministry of Health report has highlighted that the 15 new cases of HIV recorded for the months of January to May this year mainly involved young people in the 19 to 30 age group.

In confirming this ministry’s acting national advisor on family health, Dr Rachel Devi, said it had been the trend for years.

She said during the year 2014, there were 64 reported cases.

“HIV awareness has been solely focused on our young generation because most of our findings indicate that most people infected with HIV are young people,” Dr Devi said.

“This is not a good sign and the ministry is advising young people to know their status and practice safe sex.

“It is likely to increase if people do not take heed of what the ministry is advising them to prevent them from getting HIV.”

She said the ministry would basically continue to create awareness to target young people in all areas of life around the country regarding HIV.

“It would be best to find out the statistics of HIV reported cases at the end of the year,” Dr Devi said.
