The Ministry of Agriculture received a timely boost yesterday with the Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF) providing $12,000 in support of the central 2015 Agriculture Show.

The Central Division Agriculture Show will be held in Syria Park, Nausori from tomorrow till Friday. The theme for this year is ‘Sustain our Soils, Nourish Our Nation, Reaffirm our Future’.

Acting Permanent Secretary Uraia Waibuta thanked the Acting Deputy Governor of RBF, Susan Kumar for the support to the Ministry and the agriculture sector as a whole.

Mr Waibuta mentioned the majority of our rural population rely heavily on agriculture and so the Agriculture Show events is an initiative by the Ministry to disseminate information and bring about awareness on agriculture for food and nutrition security and as economic security.

He said that from 2010 to 2013, the National Agriculture Show was held at a central location either in Suva or Lautoka but since last year, the Ministry has decided to have it divisional level to bring the Shows closer to the people.

He added after analysing the National Shows, the Ministry realised it was not addressing the issues that were supposed to be addressed during the Show and a lot of farmers were not present or participating in the Show.

It is understood the Agriculture Shows for the North, West and the Lau islands have already been carried out this year, while a few more outer islands like Levuka and Kadavu have yet to confirm dates.

Reserve Bank’s Ms Kumar said that the Reserve Bank of Fiji recognises the important role the Ministry of Agriculture plays in the economy and thus are always willing to support initiatives like this.

With the cheque given to the Ministry, $10,000 is for sponsorship while $2,000 has been allocated for prize money for farmers awards in the Central Division.
